When I take my walks, I keep my eyes glued to the floor, waiting for that glimmer in the ground that stops me in my tracks. I get close to the earth to dig around and investigate further. For whatever reason, maybe an unexpected color, an intriguing shape, an attractive pattern, the stone has caught my attention and earned a spot in my pocket. It will be reunited with many like it later.

With practice, I am learning the art of collecting. My experience gathering materials directly informs the making. The resulting jewelry serves as a travelog- documenting the time and place where my collecting catalyzed self-discovery. Rocks are heavy, stagnant, and cold; their “thing-ness” constitutes the perfect vehicle for transformation into preciousness. Humans are creatures that look for meaning in everything, so how can we resist when supposed nothings are finally appreciated as somethings.
